Beginning teacher timetable requirements are as follows:

  • Autumn term: Up to 9 hours by Christmas (over 4 days)
  • Spring term 1 (Focus placement): 11 hours (over 4 days)
  • Spring term 2: Up to 13 hours by Easter (over 4 days)
  • Summer term 1: 17 hours for final 6 weeks of course (over 5 days)

If at any point you have concerns about your trainee’s capacity to cope with the required number of hours or queries about how to fulfil timetable expectations, please contact your trainee’s linked Curriculum Tutor as soon as possible.

Tutor-group contact time

We anticipate that beginning teachers will be attached to a tutor group from the start of the programme.

From the return to Main placement onwards (Spring term 2) we encourage active leadership of tutor time activities to be counted as 1 hour of timetable allocation each week.

17 hours

We appreciate that for smaller departments or departments supporting more than one beginning teacher, 17 hours can be challenging to find. Below are options for contact hours that can be counted as part of a beginning teacher timetable:

  • As mentioned above, up to one hour a week can be allocated to leading tutor time activities
  • Teaching a small amount of hours outside of subject for example in PHSE (please discuss this with your mentee’s university tutor)
  • Planning and delivering after-school/small group intervention sessions
