If you’re an experienced teacher with a degree and a minimum of two years of teaching experience in two different school settings, you may be eligible to achieve qualified teacher status (QTS) without having to do any further training as the Assessment Only route allows you to demonstrate that you already meet all of the Teachers’ Standards for QTS.

What does the route involve?

The Assessment Only programme takes place over a window of 6 to 12 weeks. Essentially, applicants need to demonstrate, with the support of their employing school, that they already meet the Teachers’ Standards. This is verified by the University during the assessment window through a series of meetings, visits to school and a portfolio of evidence compiled and presented by the candidate.

There is no taught element for this route and there is no provision of training by the University of Southampton for the Assessment Only programme. This assessment process is not appropriate for candidates wanting to learn to teach.

Who can Apply?

Candidates teaching and planning for whole classes with responsibility for their learning and progress can apply- it would be unlikely to suit candidates currently working in TA or cover supervisor roles for this reason.

Candidates must have taught in two different settings and this experience must be to consecutive age ranges e.g. KS3 and 4 or KS4&5 at secondary level or KS1 and 2 at primary level.

The Assessment Only route is covered by the Ofsted compliance requirements https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/the-assessment-only-route-to-qts which employing schools will need to be aware of and adhere to.
