There are a number of key pieces of paperwork used by mentors. These are:

  • The weekly formal lesson observation form
  • The fortnightly target setting sheet
  • The beginning teacher progress tracker (reviewed at least fortnightly)
  • The Review Statements (1-4) completed at key assessment points throughout the year.

These items of paperwork are all housed within the OneNote portfolio.

The OneNote portfolio

All course paperwork is housed within the OneNote portfolio.

Mentors will be given access to these portfolios at the start of placement.

It is the beginning teacher’s responsibility to update this portfolio and upload key paperwork following the schedule provided to them.


Formal lesson observation form

The formal lesson observation form is to be used for all formal lesson observations. Each beginning teacher should be completing at least one formal observation each week and uploading it to their OneNote portfolios


Fortnightly target setting reflection sheet

This form should be completed every two weeks during your mentor meeting. The beginning teacher is responsible for completing the reflection section before the meeting. You should complete the targets and related actions together. This form is completed directly onto the beginning teacher’s OneNote portfolio.


Beginning Teacher Progress Tracker

The progress tracker should be reviewed each fortnight alongside the fortnightly target setting sheet. Relevant statements should be highlighted to demonstrate trainee’s progress.

By the end of the course the expectation is that all statements in the first and middle column are highlighted to indicate that the standards have been met for recommendation for QTS.


Review Statements

Review statements are completed at 4 assessment points within the year. They are used to identify strengths and areas of development. They should be sent directly to the Partnership office (Partnership@soton.ac.uk) via the curriculum mentor or ITE Coordinator.
